A DAY BY THE SEA
Finborough Theatre, London, in association with Oystercatcher.
The first revival in over fifty years of this play by N. C. Hunter, the ‘English Chekhov’. A Day by the Sea was the play that John Gielgud was performing, in 1953, when his arrest for lewd behaviour occurred. The events surrounding Gielgud’s arrest were explored in a new play by Nicolas de Jongh, Plague of England, and A Day by the Sea and Plague Over England were part of a joint project created by the Finborough Theatre.
‘Tom Cooper’s remarkable production…’
- Patrick O’Connor, Times Literary Supplement
‘sensitive and refreshing to watch…. subtly restrained… A Day by the Sea is an interesting play to go and see…Historically speaking, it is the bridge that connects the happy-go-lucky era of Rattigan and Coward plays with the raging kitchen sink writing of the 50s, kicked off with John Osborne’s Look Back in Anger.’
- Tanith Lindon, Extra! Extra!
